Introduction to OpenUp! > Europeana mappings

Europeana and data mapping

The European digital library for cultural heritage, short: Europeana, launched the first version of its portal in late 2008. At that time the Europeana used a flat metadata standard based on the internationally well-established Dublin Core standard, and called it the ESE or Europeana Semantic Elements. This flat and simple metadata standard made it easy for a wide and diverse range of cultural heritage institutions to map the essential part of their metadata to it. But having continued with such a flat standard would have certainly meant to lose a lot of rich information on the various objects. Therefore Europeana started with experts groups to develop a richer and more comprehensive framework for metadata contribution to the joined platform. This newly developed standard is called EDM, the Europeana Data Model.

Most of its project life-time OpenUp! delivered its data in ESE format. During 2013 Europeana started with the implementation of the new EDM standard on their portal. OpenUp! had by then already developed a mapping of its data to EDM and finally contributed first EDM data sets in late 2013, after a previous test phase. Since December 2013 OpenUp! contributes EDM data to Europeana.

CURRENT STATUS of OpenUp! Metadata crosswalks to Europeana

The mapping from one data schema to another can be depicted in a metadata crosswalk. A first data crosswalk from ABCD to ESE was established right at the beginning of the project, spring 2011. This crosswalk was further updated and enhanced during project lifetime (eg. when data in ABCD(EFG) format was contributed or when Europeana introduced new versions of the ESE and EDM schemas).

One of the biggest challenges for crosswalks is that no two metadata schemes are 100% equivalent. One scheme may have a field that doesn't exist in another scheme, or it may have a field that is split into two different fields in another scheme. Because of that data may be lost when mapping from a complex scheme to a simpler one. This is also the case in the ABCD(EFG) to ESE mapping. Not all ABCD(EFG) fields could have been mapped to the ESE Schema, and in some cases it was necessary to append or prepend additional information in order to make the data "understandable" for users of the Europeana portal. The ABCD(EFG) standard is especially tailored for the natural heritage domain and even the current (still not complete) implementation of EDM did not allow for a 100% equivalent mapping. Fe. The ESE standard just knows the field dc:contributor without any qualification what kind of role the contributor had in the process. Therefore during OpenUp! to ESE transformation this role information (identifier or collector) was added to the value of the metadata field mapped to dc:contributor. On the other hand the EDM Standard needs a unique identifier field for each record that is forwarded to Europeana. This unique identifier, which is not yet available throughout all OpenUp! data iscreated by combining three identifier fields that are mandatory wihtin the ABCD(EFG) standard: The SourceInstitution ID, the Institution ID, Source ID.

OpenUp! ABCD(EFG) to Europeana ESE crosswalk (unrestricted)

The schema crosswalks are tables that show equivalent elements (or "fields") in the ABCD(EFG) schema and the Europeana standards. All crosswalks include partial lists of the elements for each standard, focusing on the areas of overlap. For the full list of elements and the descriptions of these elements, click on the name of the standard at the top of the column.

This crosswalk depicts the unrestricted mapping of the ABCD(EFG) v2.06 to the Europeana ESE v3.4.1 data fields. The final mapping version was issued October 3rd 2013.

The column Obligation shows whether the field is mandatory for Europeana (ESE). In some cases Europeana requires one of two possible fields (eg. either dc:title or dc:description).
The column Transformation Comment displays important comments for the automatic data transformation, it was kept here for further information purposes.

FAQ

What is ESE?

ESE (Europeana Semantic Elements) is the metadata standard of the Europeana portal. It consists mainly on Dublin Core standard metadata fields and is enhanced with several "Europeana data fields". The Europeana data fields have been added in order to allow a common display of the various data in the Europeana portal and to enable certain portal browsing features. (eg. Browse by Copyright, Browse by Provider, etc.)

What is EDM?

The Europeana Data Model (short: EDM) is a far more comprehensive metadata model than ESE and will be the favoured data standard for Europeana in the future. EDM data presentation will allow the display of linked data in a wide semantic context. EDM will also support the presentation of the original data of each domain without reducing it to a minimum common denominator (like ESE). "EDM is not built on any particular community standard but rather adopts an open, cross-domain Semantic Web-based framework that can accommodate particular community standards such as LIDO, EAD or METS." (EDM PRIMER)

EDM presentation of data will be implemented in the Europeana portal ( http://www.europeana.eu ) step by step in 2012. The first OpenUp! ingest of data into Europeana in February 2012 will be with data in ESE format.

What is "restriced data"?

This is the minimal set of (ESE) data fields that have to be supplied in order to have your metadata ingested into the Europeana Portal.

Where do I find the links to my objects and to my website in the Europeana portal?

There are two data fields that Europeana uses for linking from the portal to the digital objects and the websites of the providers. In addition there is one Europeana data field especially used for thumbnail creation in the Europeana portal.

Find more information in this document.

What should be the file format of the digital object that I want to make accessible for Europeana (via a direct link)?

These are the technical requirements for the digital object that is accessible via europeana:isShownBy respectively ABCD: /DataSets/DataSet/Units/Unit/MultiMediaObjects/MultiMediaObject/FileURI:

1 The provider’s servers should reply positively to the query of the Europeana server trough a ht-access file (no access restrictions)
2 The file to be displayed should be one of the following formats: jpeg, mp3, mp4, txt, pdf, wmv, flv

What is the OpenUp! OAI-PMH Interface?

With the OAI-PMH test interface one can search through all data that has been uploaded. The OAI-PMH test interface serves for validation of the transformed records previous to their ingest into the Europeana portal. The platform depicts all records, ESE valid or invalid. (Upon request) The content providers receive username and password for individual access to their records. This is a test platform and speed and access to the platform might be restricted at times! The user guidelines for the OAI-PMH Interface can be downloaded here.

Can I pre-check whether OpenUp! can harvest my BioCase provider?

Mid of 2012 an online sandbox version of the GBIF HIT component used by OpenUp! has been installed. By using this sandbox the OpenUp! content providers can check if a harvest of their BioCase datasources would work.

The sandbox may be reached via:

http://test118.ait.co.at:8080/hit   (user/pwd= admin/sb)

The content provider needs to add the BioCase Datasource that should be tested.
This is done via the button "add BioDatasource" at the right bottom of the screen.
Further descriptions may be found in the User Manual: http://code.google.com/p/gbif-indexingtoolkit/wiki/UserManual.
